Cultural Awareness Guides
Law enforcement agencies involved in OIC cases respond to a high proportion of victims who are foreign nationals, and it’s important to build trust by understanding and acknowledging their cultural differences and needs.
The OICDT cultural awareness guides include webinars with expert presenters providing insights into the culture of foreign nationals, an understanding of the victim’s journey and history, and an awareness of the barriers faced in disclosing what has happened in the past, acknowledging the trauma and helping to build engagement and trust.
Cultural resources informed by subject experts and lived experience have sections on issues such as historical background, useful greetings/phrases, taboo subjects, key cultural elements, reasons for migration, family structure, gender dynamics and interaction with authority.
In addition, each resource includes a cue card with useful phrases in the victim's own language, with English translation.
